Caring for Others Through Relationships: Pedagogical Approaches Inspired by Narrative
摘要
People experience constant changes that have the power to transform their lives. Illness can derail a person’s sense of self and cause significant biographical disruptions. Humanistic care means considering the fragility of each human being, the carer, and the cared for, embracing their vulnerability, and caring for them with respect and understanding of their experiences of suffering and identity. By telling their story individuals can release their hidden anguish and transform it into a new, more meaningful direction. Building a strong relationship and fostering open communication between clinicians and the persons is key to supporting personal growth and development. Educational contexts are crucial for raising awareness and educating students and clinicians to be sensitive to people’s suffering and nurture meaningful relationships that heal people. I believe that offering different opportunities to the students that come close to the experience of people cared for, really can promote the development of empathy and compassion that are crucial for humanized care. Narrative Medicine helped me to have a different vision about empathic care-promoting strategies. These are the questions on which the present chapter sets out to reflect. Through dialogue with literature, I will discuss the pedagogical strategies that were developed and inspired by narrative medicine and used to address relationships and narrative in my experience as a nurse educator.
