The phenomenological elements of the body allow for its use in art, medicine, and as a teaching tool. In this chapter, the role of the body as material used for culturally and scientifically important aspects will be addressed, beginning with the role of the body in educational spaces. The role of medicinal aspects from use of cadavers as teaching tools as well as the role of mummia or medicinal cannibalism will also be addressed, focusing on the use of the physical body as a medicine beginning in the Middle Ages. Finally, the ritual role of anthropophagy (cannibalism) will be approached, from both a religious and compassionate viewpoint. In examining anthropophagy, both compassionate mortuary cannibalism and religious cannibalism can be examined as a form of communion, a ritual feast that seeks to promote group cohesion. The human body is uniquely able to fill this need, and without the human body as food in these cases, the ritual feast would not have the same meaning.
