Fire in the Rainforest: Biodiversity Crisis in the Amazon Basin
摘要
Deforestation and global temperature increase can induce a tipping of the Amazon rainforest. Governance of the rainforest determines the effectiveness of protection regimes, which need to balance the interests of different stakeholders, such as farmers, indigenous groups, and other local residents. Providing livelihood options beyond the unsustainable use of forest resources is key for long-term acceptability of preservation of biodiversity hotspots. Large-scale wildfires and droughts in the past years have caused habitat loss for many species and reduced the resilience of the forest ecosystem. The further degradation of the forest could impact regional precipitation patterns and lead to economic losses. So far, the role of biodiversity in the nexus of climate change and migration is not sufficiently researched, though biodiversity loss can be a driver of movements, often in combination with the impacts of global warming. This chapter looks at the interactions of biodiversity loss and climate change by drawing insights from the Amazon basin.
