Climate change and its intersections with different forms of human mobility have been increasingly the subject of academic research, with strongly rising numbers of publications over the past decade. The multicausal nature of the drivers of migration, leading to a variety of outcomes from voluntary movements to forced displacement, is well explored. However, gaps in data and context dependencies make migration difficult to project under different climate scenarios, especially when immobility can also result from worsening environmental conditions. Migration occurs over different timescales and distances, for example, internal, rural-urban, or transboundary migration take place. This chapter looks at different migration patterns and how climate change can shape these, also contrasting its scale and speed to previous changes in human environments.
