Pneumoconioses are diseases caused by dust inhalation, and many forms of pneumoconiosis are functionally, radiologically, and morphologically similar to ILD of other causes. Asbestosis in particular can mimic UIP/IPF, and diffuse fibrosis can be seen with high exposure to sheet silicates such as talc as well as in workers exposed to silica or coal. Other forms of pneumoconiosis create disease that starts around the respiratory bronchioles and produce stellate or nodular lesions: coal worker’s pneumoconiosis and silicosis fall into the category. Some dust exposures, notably to crystalline silica, predispose to connective tissue diseases and vasculitis. A few forms of pneumoconiosis are morphologically distinctive: hard metal disease is the best example.
