The chapter will establish the conceptual framework upon which the following empirical exploration is based. It identifies the current evidence gap on disability and gender as well as outlining existing work on disablism and ableism which this study builds on. The chapter will also demonstrate the ways in which public space is structured as ableist space, which works to exclude disabled people. Issues of accessibility and inclusion are shown to present particular barriers that are framed within the wider context of ableism and stereotypes about who should access public space. Noting Jenny (Morris, 1993) critique that mainstream feminist approaches to violence often failed to include disabled women in their theory and politics, the chapter will situate the project as part of the call to include dismissed voices. Centrally, it will be shown that disabled women are more likely to experience violence and abuse, yet less likely to have this recognised publicly and politically.
