Three examples of reading Proust in prison, the setting, and time necessary for his lengthy novel. One example is novelistic and from Haruki Murakami, the second is that of a Soviet political prisoner, Jozef Czapski, and the last is that of a former drug addict serving time for robbery, Daniel Genis. Crime and punishment in Proust and Roth. Crime in both Proust and Roth tends to involve betrayal, deception, and lying. Actual physical crimes are few. Funerals and the inescapability of death emerge in both writers, while the body becomes a jail. The difficulties of filming Proust and Roth with attempts ranging from Harold Pinter (Proust) to Al Pacino (Roth). Yet both writers incorporate cinematic elements in their work but the cinematic challenges remain.
