This study presents work on pressure wave amplification in fluids contained in converging tapered pipes. This pressure amplification was compared to previous work on stress waves in solid tapered bars numerically and experimentally. Impact experiments and finite element analysis were done with varying impact waves and tapered pipe sections. The experimental data was compared to the spherical wave assumption, and a relationship between amplification and the relative rise time was observed. The analysis showed that the fluid media inside a solid shell amplifies similarly to a solid media inside a fluid. Another surprising result was that the pipe impedance had no direct impact on amplification. This demonstrates the potential of a pressure amplification device that utilizes high-pressure waves, such as waterjet cutting, drilling, and cleaning.
