The introduction unfolds the chapter topic by discussing challenges and solutions for development cooperation in fragile states. Fragile states are more dependent on foreign aid while also facing greater risks related to security and trust. The introduction briefly presents the two contributions to the chapter, one (Wegener) dealing with the concept of remote management, which has been increasingly adopted by international donors in response to security concerns and travel restrictions, the other (Eisenberg, Baldé, Martinez, Schweizer and Gomido) presenting challenges and best practices in North–South inter-university cooperation as a specific form of collaboration. Both contributions emphasize the importance of selecting reliable partners, using modern technologies, and building local capacities. They provide valuable insights for international cooperation projects in vulnerable and fragile states.
