UrbanizationUrbanization isSustainability a powerful expression of the cultural traits of any human societySociety. However, a comprehensive picture of MediterraneanMediterranean urbanities has been rather difficult to delineate, as it has experienced recurrent conflicts and intense exchanges from three different continents. This contribution reviews and debates the dominant ‘urban cultures’ in post-war Southern European cities. The empirical findings of our study—corroborated with an extensive literature review from multiple disciplinary perspectives—reveal that the MediterraneanMediterranean region results as heterogeneous in some aspects (e.g. spatial forms), and more similar in others (e.g. social dynamics and behaviors). Rejecting a unique model at the base of the ‘MediterraneanMediterranean city’ archetype does not imply that there are no common characteristics that metropolitan centers of this geographical region may share. We finally focused on the peculiar dynamics and attitudes of the MediterraneanMediterranean societiesSociety which have played, together with informal economic systems, a crucial role in the metropolitan development of the region.
