This chapter contains a critical reading of several of Ann Rule’s publications. These publications include The Stranger Beside Me, The I-5 Killer, Small Sacrifices, If You Really Loved Me, Green River Running Red, and Practice to Deceive (Rule, The Stranger Beside Me. Sphere, 1989; Green River, Running Red. Pocket Books, 2005; Small Sacrifices. Sphere, 2006; Practice to Deceive. Gallery Books, 2013; The I-5 Killer. Penguin, 2019). These works were taken from Rule’s back catalogue of bestselling publications, selected for their commercial successes and sales records. Across these works, critical consideration is afforded to the areas of narrative methodology, characterisation and voice, literary techniques and language, and research materials. Rule’s use of landscape, as an integral part of her narrative construction, is also explored. The topic of authorial consistency is raised here as being a quality of successful authors and, indeed, something observable and traceable across Rule’s writing. Insofar as critical analysis, the various elements that are highlighted and analysed here are also proposed as being akin to True Crime writing genre conventions. An argument is made for the ways in which these techniques, utilised in such distinct ways by Rule, formed the bedrock of contemporary female True Crime writing.

摘要
