Infections of the head and neck occur commonly in students. The evaluation of a student who presents with a possible infection of the head or neck begins with a thorough history and physical examination, focusing on airway, breathing, and circulation. Red flags, indicating a more serious infection requiring emergency department (ED) referral, is noted in the five cases presented in this chapter.
