Bipolar disorders are mood disorders which, though uncommon in children, have overlapping symptoms with common pediatric psychiatric conditions. All healthcare providers can aid in identifying mental health conditions and directing children to appropriate treatment. Bipolar disorder management includes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches. Additional considerations include school accommodations if psychiatric symptoms and/or medication side effects impair classroom function, organizations which support children and their families, and early intervention clinics if psychotic symptoms are present.
