It is estimated that nearly 1 in 12 children aged 3–17 years and 1 in 4 adolescents aged 13–18 years are diagnosed with an anxiety related disorder in the United States (Kowalchuk A, Gonzalez SJ, Zoorob RJ. Anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. Am Fam Physician 2022;106(6):657–664). Individuals can experience varying levels of impairment and diagnoses range from specific phobias to social anxieties, separation anxiety, panic disorders, and generalized anxiety. In addition, trauma related disorders, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, often result in a heightened degree of common symptoms associated with anxiety. With proper screening and interventions, the prognosis for anxiety disorders is significantly improved as children develop skills to establish resiliency through consistency and supportive relationships.
