Central venous access devices (CVADs) are intravenous (IV) lines that are inserted into large veins. These devices are essential for the treatment of children with chronic health conditions, including cancer, short-gut syndrome, and blood disorders. They are often utilized to administer IV nutrition, fluids, or medications. A school nurse may encounter different forms of CVADs, which consist of central venous catheters or lines (CVCs and CVLs), peripherally inserted catheters (PICCs), or implanted ports (Table 60.1 and Fig. 60.1). This chapter will present cases of children with three of the most common central venous access devices and bring awareness to CVAD complications and emergencies.
