Headaches are common in school aged and adolescent children. Many headaches can be treated safely and effectively with over-the-counter medications. However, care should be taken to assess for concerning symptoms prior to treatment, such as focal neurologic deficits or signs of increased intracranial pressure. It is also important to be aware of underlying medical conditions that may predispose a child to a serious intracranial process. Some children will experience chronic headaches that can impede participation in schools. In these cases, it can be helpful to coordinate care with the student’s pediatrician or neurologist.
