This chapter describes the assessment of a child with altered mental status in a school environment. Altered mental status is a general term which encompasses depressed mental status, delirium, and psychosis. We will explore the differential diagnosis of altered mental status using a variety of case based scenarios and review the assessment of a child with acutely altered mental status and discuss several “can’t miss” diagnoses.
