Death and loss are a normal and inevitable part of life and the accompanying grief is a normal and appropriate response to an internalized sense of loss. Children will repeatedly experience and be exposed to grief due to the loss of loved ones, divorce or separation of parents, natural disasters, worldwide pandemics, gun related deaths, terrorist attacks, and more. Grief will be more difficult to cope with for children lacking the necessary support and mature coping skills needed to navigate these situations and emotions. By facing death with open communication and adaptability, our schools can mitigate risk factors by becoming a safe place for students. This chapter details two cases of children with grief to discuss potential considerations and intervention strategies in the practical school setting.
