The experience of the French Revolution in northern Catalonia is placed in the context of the fate of an ethnic minority partitioned from their own people south of the Pyrenees, against their will and as victims of seventeenth-century geo-politics. In the frontier region changes unleashed by the Revolution came up against the values, beliefs and self-interests of a liminal region not yet fully absorbed into the wider French nation. The population was ethnically Catalan and had been incorporated into the French state for just over a century before the outbreak of the Revolution. Roussillon was on the fringe of the French nation, and parts of the province, particularly the highlands, were practically inaccessible to the wider world. Borderlands continue to fascinate historians, and the response to the Revolution along the Catalan brings revealing insights into this area of study. Similarly, research into revolution and war in French Catalonia adds to the wealth of regional studies of this period of French history. Principal archive sources and secondary sources are prefaced, and commentary on the role and input of Catalan autonomist writers is offered.
