Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or intraductal carcinoma accounts for approximately one-fourth of all new diagnosed breast cancers in the United States (American Cancer Society. Cancer Facts & Figures, 2017). Screening mammography has increased the detection of DCIS with more than 90% of DCIS lesions identified on imaging studies (Brinton et al., J Natl Cancer Inst 100(22):1643–1648, 2008). Most patients with DCIS are treated in a multidisciplinary setting and can be offered breast-conserving therapy (BCT) which includes breast-conserving surgery (BCS) (i.e., partial mastectomy) and adjuvant radiation.
