This chapter presents a detailed discussion of optical directional couplers, which is one of the important components of integrated quantum photonic circuits. Coupled mode theory is used to analyze two waveguide directional coupler, three waveguide directional coupler, and waveguide arrays. Optical switch using a directional coupler is also presented. The analysis presented in this chapter is used extensively in later chapters.
