Sum frequency generation (SFG) and difference frequency generation (DFG) in optical waveguides are discussed in detail in this chapter. Coupled mode equations for three wave interaction are derived and solved under phase matched and non-phase matched interaction and quasi phase matched interaction. Difference frequency generation is shown to lead to optical amplification of the signal through nonlinear interaction. Expressions for the bandwidth of SFG and DFG are also derived.
