This chapter outlines a series of steps and practice “tips” to assist in connecting effectively with children and young people both in family and individual sessions. Preparation and planning for a therapy session is discussed together with attention to the importance of timing, pacing and attempts to connect and challenge family members creatively. The importance of supervision to focus on therapeutic impasses is explored.
