Personal Space of People in Movement Under Different Conditions

The paper investigates the space occupied by a person (personal space) in movement under different conditions. Different movement scenarios are studied, including normal and competitive movement, movement in a straight corridor with or without bottlenecks. To estimate personal space, Voronoi diagrams are used. It is assumed that the area of a Voronoi cell corresponds to the area of personal space. Time series and histograms of the areas of Voronoi cells were constructed. Personal space is considered in both transition and steady-state regimes as well as in the static position of waiting people. The minimum value of the area does not persist for a long time due to the temporary compression of human flow. People keep a space around themselves when waiting. During competitive movement, people can move in relatively limited conditions. Transition regimes require more space than steady-state ones for movement.
