Socio-environmental Impacts of Sustainable Waste Management
摘要
Millions of metric tons of waste are produced because of urbanization. Sustainable waste management is a product of circular economy concept that is beneficial to the society, environment, and economy. It solves the waste disposal issues with improved waste management practices and reduced human footprint on environment leading to clean air, water, and soil. It involves the monitoring, collection, transportation, valorization, and disposal of waste, such that environment and human health of future generations are not compromised. It protects the environment from the impacts of resource extraction, promote economical and environment friendly processes and thereby improving air and water quality along with reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, embarking on renewable energy sources like biogas, solve energy crisis to support huge population loads through the concept of waste-to-energy and cradle-to-cradle to render the environment waste free. The 4R system, reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover, helps in minimizing waste and environmental costs. In return, it boosts the economy and generate employment opportunities for the society, increasing per capita income, improve the overall human life by preventing health issues, increasing good and healthy lifestyle, ensuring surplus availability of resources to all the people, reducing food wastes, ensuring good food and water quality available to all, and providing a blissful environment to live in. Hence, an effective and integrated sustainable waste management system needs to be implemented and strictly enforced through environmental regulations. It requires active involvement of local government, Non-Government Organizations, residents, private sector, donor agencies, garbage collectors, and scavengers.
