Confronting the Challenges of the 21st Century
摘要
We are currently at an inflection point, marking a critical moment of significant transformation in Earth’s history. Since the first successful detonation of a nuclear device, a notable technological achievement, humanity has possessed the means to annihilate all life on this planet. Unfortunately, we often restrict ourselves to merely mitigating the damage inflicted on Earth’s ecosystems instead of eradicating it entirely. Our technologies frequently disregard the wisdom of ancient cultures that predate the Western model. The extinction rates of animal and plant species now surpass any previously recorded rates by orders of magnitude. Engineering has been, and continues to be, pivotal in the development of these technologies. At this juncture in history, it is imperative that we rigorously examine and reflect upon the principles of ethical engineering.
