The Human Sensor

There are thousands of mechanical sensors that can collect a great breadth of data in regards to collections care, however, there are still limitations on what data we can log from physical hardware. As humans, we are constantly observing the world around us, and if captured the right way, these observations have the potential to create even richer datasets. Conserv, a technology company focusing on preventive conservation tools, has incorporated an “observations” tool directly within our analytics software and mobile application. So far, our users have recorded observations having to do with the exterior weather, conservation wet cleaning treatments, building envelope issues, mechanical issues with their climate control system, and dew forming on surfaces among others. These observations can be visualized on an observation timeline alongside time series visualizations to provide more context when interpreting datasets. Users can also contribute observations with images directly from the mobile application, which is designed as a way to encourage more data entry from a larger team of people who are monitoring the collection, including gallery attendants and security staff. These observations allow users to better interpret their environmental data, but what if these observations were categorized and quantified in a way to more fully integrate into the analysis? We are building out the software to allow observations to be linked to specific objects and materials, provide users with the option of entering both quantitative and qualitative data, and assign categories for qualitative observations. The more data we can collect on the direct effect the environment has on our collections over time, the better we can supplement our understanding of environmental impact on materials through artificial aging techniques.
