For optimisation both environmental preventive conservation and modelling of decay require measurement of object deterioration rates. Instrumentation has developed to the point that this is now feasible in some situations with sufficient precautions and understanding of instrument stability and likely errors. Complex environments mean in situ measurements are desirable. The main approaches are described and assessed, with examples to highlight the important issues.
