Trialogical Learning and Academia-Industry Partnerships in ‘Sensors for Medical Instrumentation and Signal Processing’ Curricular Unit of the ManagiDiTH Master’s Program

Healthcare institutions and service designers must adapt to rapid technological changes and leverage digitalization, especially highlighted by the COVID-19 crisis. The Managing Digital Transformation in the Health Sector (ManagiDiTH) project was created to develop a Master’s program aimed at equipping the health sector with specialized digital skills. This program is co-created through international collaboration among universities, industry experts, and healthcare organizations. Effective digital training must combine transversal, sectorial, service design, and technological learning, necessitating interdisciplinary approaches in higher education. Higher education institutions are pivotal in creating new knowledge and innovations, making trialogical learning essential for biomedical and health informatics programs. The ManagiDiTH Master’s program draws on expertise from partner institutions in Finland, Greece, and Portugal. It aims to: (i) Develop training references for the European Qualifications Framework. (ii) Implement a trialogical pedagogical model with problem-based learning. (iii) Create an interdisciplinary learning ecosystem with a quadruple helix model. (iv) Upskill graduates from various relevant backgrounds. This paper uses the ‘Sensors for Medical Instrumentation and Signal Processing’ unit as a case study to examine and improve the program. The unit addresses the growing impact of IoT in healthcare, aiming to produce professionals skilled in managing and processing data securely.
