Work-in-Progress: VR/AR Interactive Framework to Enhance Communication in Engineering Education

Despite the clear identification of the importance of communication skills in engineering and efforts by educators to address this, the lack of communication and collaboration skills has continued to plague engineering education (EE) for decades. This effort, which is a work-in progress, is an effort in this direction, endeavoring to address this documented lack of innovative and stimulating pedagogical practices to strengthen communication and interpersonal skills in engineering education through the use of affordable, interactive virtual design modules. With due consideration to EE pedagogical and curricular requirements, a clear evaluation procedure will be used to follow and assess gains in learning outcomes. This effort aims to not only improve communication skills in EE, but also promotes the awareness among engineering educators. Virtual worlds are especially appropriate tools for promoting communication as they are capable of simultaneously targeting multiple aspects of communication (oral, listening, non-verbal, visual, interdisciplinary) through the innovative juxtaposition of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic features. However, some of the studies have noted the limitations in the UI capabilities of the virtual environments pose constraints in the user interactions. This study will address the above problem using the rich library of virtual objects from earlier studies to develop scenes that are easy to navigate through and interact. Properly designed human computer interactions (HCI) not only can serve to stimulate users to participate and engage, but are good tools for facilitating both verbal and non-verbal communications. As this is a Work-in-Progress, the actual assessment needs to be performed after making further improvements to the framework.
