Chemical Composition of Nonferrous Metal from the Golden Horde Settlement Podymalovo-1 in the Bashkir Urals (the Materials of the 2017 Excavation)

The paper presents the results of a chemical composition analysis of objects made of non-ferrous metals found at the excavations of the Golden Horde settlement of Podymalovo-1 in the Bashkir Urals in 2017. The findings were analyzed using electron microscopy, which resulted in at least five spectrum samples from each object. The average values demonstrated a non-ferrous composition of the elements. As a result, we found that most of the objects were made of two to three-component bronze. The distribution of tin-containing objects in the layers and complexes was irregular. Archaeozoological studies of more than 2,657 bones revealed that the degree of bone fragmentation decreased beginning at the 4th horizon, and the proportion of bones definable to the type increases by almost two times compared with the upper horizons. The differences between the upper and lower horizons, which were revealed during archaeozoological studies and analysis of non-ferrous metal, indicate two periods of settlement expansion. These conclusions are not reflected in the stratigraphy of settlements in any way, but have become possible due to comprehensive scientific research of these findings.
