This chapter introduces the research topic of this book, including the background, motivation, scope, and significance of the workload-dependent mitigation approaches. We will start with an introduction of the goal of this work, the timing guarantee requirements of applications. Then, we will elaborate on performance variability in integrated systems, which is the main threat to timing guarantees. After that, the main gaps in the literature in the field of timing guarantees are discussed. Finally, we will give an overview of the book, including the problem statement, our main contributions in filling the gaps of the state-of-the-art, and the structure of the whole book.
