A major turning point in the reevaluation of U.S. grand strategy came with the end of the Cold War. This chapter charts the evolution of U.S. grand strategy from the presidency of George H. W. Bush to those of Bill Clinton, George W. Bush Jr., and Barack H. Obama. Indeed, a thorough examination of the administrations of its predecessors offers important insights into the principles underlying Obama's grand strategy. Understanding the strategic choices made by his predecessors, helps us to better comprehend the rationale behind Obama's approach to foreign policy and global engagement. In this regard, this chapter serves as a historical framework for understanding the development of U.S. grand strategy in the post-Cold War era. With that in mind, this chapter illuminates the continuities and divergences in U.S. foreign policy over time, offering a nuanced understanding of the complexities inherent in crafting and implementing grand strategy.
