The book seeks to understand how current high levels of economic inequality are accepted and maintained. The conclusion it will reach is that there six sources of confusion about economic inequality: obfuscation, diversion, division, justificatory beliefs, dominant economic theory, and powerful vested interests. Chapters 2 , 3 , 4 , and 5 aim to clarify issues including the distinctions between income and wealth inequality, poverty, class, and mobility, and the ways in which economic inequality is bad for individual health and societal cohesion. Chapters 6 and 7 examine the beliefs, such as beliefs in meritocracy and individual choice, which help maintain inequality. Chapter 8 examines the role of neoliberal economic theory and the growth of financialisation, and Chap. 9 the role of political choice and the way power can be exercised to influence beliefs. Chapter 10 outlines policies which have potential to promote greater economic equality. But their acceptance requires a raising of awareness of the importance of economic inequality, and that means addressing the six impediments that stand in its way. The books and academic journals which provided the book’s main source material are listed.
