Algae as a Promising Source of Vitamins and Protein: Current Prospects and Challenges

Algae, encompassing microalgae (e.g., Spirulina, Chlorella) and macroalgae (e.g., kelp, nori), have surfaced as a sustainable and nutrient-dense nourishment capable of tackling global nutritional and food safety issues. These organisms effectively transform sunlight and CO2 into biomass, flourish in various habitats, and possess a negligible ecological footprint relative to traditional protein sources, such as livestock and soy. Algae can proliferate in saltwater, freshwater, and wastewater, enabling cultivation without competition for agricultural land or freshwater, thus serving as an environmentally sustainable alternative for massive agricultural operations. Algae are abundant in vital vitamins, such as A, B12, C, and E, and they provide proteins that encompass all nine essential amino acids, rendering them a comprehensive protein source appropriate for vegetarian and vegan diets. They offer essential omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and antioxidants, establishing them as an effective means to combat malnutrition and enhance global health. Notwithstanding this promise, considerable challenges persist, including the necessity for optimized cultivation practices, economical production methods, and an enhanced comprehension of the bioavailability of algae-derived nutrients. The lack of standardized regulations and policies regarding algae production hinders its broader implementation in the food industry. Filling these knowledge gaps via research, industry cooperation, and public education is crucial for actualizing the entire potential of algae as a widespread, sustainable food supply for future generations.
