The recent COVID epidemic has intensified the pressures and frustrations of medical practice. Compounding the problems of excessive system demands, including growing bureaucracy and intrusion, more time spent on nonclinical duties, electronic medical record documentation, and changing roles and responsibilities, concerns about staffing, resource availability, and capacity have pushed the limits of physician viability. In response many physicians have left practice to pursue other opportunities or have retired prematurely. Those who remain suffer through increased frustration and dissatisfaction. In some cases, this leads to counterproductive behaviors that can jeopardize quality, safety, and continuity of care. We can’t expect the physician on their own to resolve these issues. Looking at physicians as a precious resource, organizations need to recognize the seriousness of the situation and take proactive steps to address these system aggravated problems.
