Advances in technology, such as the electronic health record (EHR) and telehealth, have changed the patient-physician interaction. This chapter examines the impact of technology on the patient-physician relationship from the perspective of both patients and physicians. It explores the concept of the iPatient, multitasking with the EHR and distracted doctoring, and the impact of the EHR on patient and physician experiences. It also looks at the rise of telehealth and the role it plays in patient care, patient safety, and provider professionalism. The chapter concludes with a discussion of strategies to teach healthcare professionals about patient-centered EHR use and how to promote optimal patient-physician-computer engagement across the continuum.
