Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental disorder that impacts patients and family members. As individuals with BD grow older, they face new challenges, such as cognitive decline and functional impairment related to multiple clinical and psychiatric comorbidities. These challenges are compounded and lead to worse quality of life, more disability, and major challenges for the management of these individuals. Pharmacological treatments have shown a favorable balance between side effects and effectiveness in older adults. Additionally, psychosocial interventions are generally needed to promote adherence and provide psychoeducation and family support, especially in increased caregiver burden scenarios.
