Suicide risk and prevention is a core element of the care of patients with bipolar disorder (BD). The heightened risk is well understood; however, how best to conceptualize and approach this issue remains a source of uncertainty for many care providers. This chapter will review several aspects, including what is known about risk and risk factors for suicide in BD, what are some treatment approaches that should be considered, and also what do new research and updated conceptual models tell us about this complex and evolving topic. Borrowing from the broader suicide prevention literature, the chapter will propose a comprehensive approach for care providers and use a case example to discuss specific implementation approaches.
