The importance of achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals has been recognized as a significant task for the future of the world. As one of the leading carbon emitters globally, China plays a crucial role in reducing its carbon emissions. The coal production sector contributes significantly to China's carbon footprint, hence finding efficient ways to reduce emissions is a top priority. This study utilizes the life cycle theory to examine and quantify carbon emissions in the open-pit coal mining process, aiming to pinpoint sources and levels of emissions while establishing a suitable carbon accounting framework for such mines. Using Zhundong Coal Mine as a case study, a calculation model is applied to assess carbon emissions. The results are then analyzed, and various carbon reduction strategies are proposed to guide Chinese coal mines in their efforts to lower carbon emissions.
