Analysis of Emission Reduction Effect of Plug-In Hybrid Passenger Cars Based on the Perspective of Life Cycle

China's NEV industry has been ushered into a new stage of high-quality development, initially forming a market pattern of “low-class models using BEV technology and high-class models using PHEV technology”. In 2023, the size of China's PHEV market exceeded 2,300 k vehicles, and the market growth rate was far higher than that of BEV. As a result, some scholars believe that the rapid expansion of the PHEV market may pose a potential risk to the achievement of China's dual-carbon goals. Currently, most of the research results in China focus on the assessment of carbon emissions of the previous generation of PHEVs, and no researches have been carried out on the definition of e-range of PHEVs and actual electric propulsion utility factor, as well as the assessment of carbon emissions under the framework of new-generation hybrid vehicles. In this paper, the accounting model of life cycle carbon emissions has been optimized in order to deeply analyze the 3 key influencing factors, namely, actual electric propulsion utility factor, fuel consumption under the charge-sustaining mode, and electric energy consumption under the charge-depleting mode, and comprehensively evaluate the changes in the carbon emission trends of PHEVs with different ranges during their life cycle, as well as the carbon emission reduction effects of different fuel models during their life cycle. The research results will provide a scientific basis for the medium- and long-term positioning of industrial policy management of PHEVs, and meanwhile play a positive role in guiding the development of key technical indicators.
