In attempting to reconstruct key events from the period 1869 to 1872, we should keep in mind some obvious questions that will help to clarify some important issues addressed in this chapter. To begin with: what did Klein know about non-Euclidean geometry and related matters and when did he know it? Secondly, how was this knowledge or lack thereof reflected in his published work? Finally, what consequences, if any, did Klein’s style of presentation have for those who read his works? This last question would seem to invite boundless speculation, yet we know with certainty that Klein’s initial publications on non-Euclidean geometry met with considerable resistance.

摘要
