Sensory nerve injury is the most important potential postoperative complication of third molar removal; it can also occur during dental injection. Pain, swelling, and other complications caused by surgical invasion decrease with time, but paraesthesia and other neuronal impairments can remain for a long period. A nerve injury that is associated with third molar extraction can cause taste impairment and sensory loss in the tongue. Such long-term complications can affect the patient’s quality of life.
