Principles of Spinal Instrumentation
摘要
Different types of implants can be used for spinal instrumentation. Spinal instrumentations are most of the time rigid (arthrodesis and synthesis); however, some instrumentations aim to preserve motion. Implants can differ in terms of size, material, and type of anchorage to the spine. The type of implant also varies depending on the spinal area (i.e., cervical, thoracic, lumbar, or pelvic) and according to the anatomical structure of the vertebra. Some of them are intended to be used in the anterior column of the spine, such as interbody or corpectomy cages, or posterior such as pedicle screws and hooks. Different implants may have the same purpose but would be more efficient or convenient in certain conditions. Therefore, it is essential to know the features of the different types of implants to reach the surgery goal according to preoperative planning, in order to ensure the best outcome for the patient.
