This chapter attempts to further ground the relation between orality and psychosis, taking its cue from Walter J. Ong’s claim that ‘bicamerality may mean simply orality’ (Orality and Literacy). This alignment between bicameralism and orality suggests the need for a radical repositioning of the psychotic within the frame of orality and literacy studies. Looking to Jaynes’ 1976 study, The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind, the chapter explores and exposes the many ways in which bicameralism echoes orality, as well as discussing Jaynes’s expansive discussion of the styles of bicameral art, which are similarly reflective of oral art. As will be shown, Jaynes is a key figure not only in that he gives substantial newfound insight into the oral mindset, exposing the motivations for the recurrent aesthetic characteristics of many disparate ancient cultures, but also in providing a clear link between orality and the psychotic.
