This chapter presents an overall description of image schemas as mind forms derived from the brain’s transformation of lived experience into mental structures that guide our understanding of abstractions in mathematics and language alike. After being formed within neural circuitry, image schemas become cognitive templates guiding further understanding. A typology of image schemas is discussed, both in terms of how it evolved within embodied cognitive science and how it can be used to carry out the study of math cognition, at least in some part. This is followed by a historical analysis of the main sources of image schema theory, such as the Gestalt movement in psychology, and by the proposal that there are three meta-image-schemas, stasis, motion, and force, which seem to undergird the different image schema subtypes. This chapter ends with a discussion of system thinking in mathematics as the end result of image-schematic conceptualizations.
