Trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs) are primary headache disorders with unique clinical features that separate them from migraine. The main neuroimaging studies have concentrated on cluster headache, using structural, metabolic and functional imaging to attempt to understand the underlying pathophysiology of the acute attacks and the changes that occur between different states of the condition, whether in bout or out of bout. Only a handful of imaging studies have been performed on the rarer TACs. Given the rarity of the conditions, the sample sizes are often small; therefore, further research is required in this field to improve our understanding of TACs.
