E-learning represents an optimal solution for Lifelong Learning educational programs. However, in the context of Italian higher education, various forms of resistance persist against this delivery method, despite its demonstrated advantages. This paper examines these challenges, situating Lifelong Learning programs within the broader framework of university Public Engagement and community outreach initiatives. Specifically, it focuses on the role of e-learning in expanding access to knowledge and fostering active participation, aligned with the objectives of the PNRR, Mission 4, Component 1, Investments 1.4 and 1.5. The analysis is informed by the authors’ direct experience with Public Engagement, Outreach, and Lifelong Learning initiatives through e-learning platforms within the Lazio Region’s Innovation Hub, represented by the Rome Technopole Foundation. This paper provides a critical overview of Public Engagement and demonstrates how e-learning-based Citizen Education programs can serve both as a mechanism for involving the community in academic research and decision-making processes, and as an indicator of the university’s active dialogue with its surrounding community. This dialogue serves as a foundation for future research into effective and sustainable engagement strategies.
