An Integrated Approach Using GIS in Indigenous Peoples to Manage Rokoraka Forest in Southwest Sumba Regency, Indonesia

Climate change has become an influential agenda for global society. One of the causes is human activity in the form of deforestation. Rokoraka Forest is a water buffer in Southwest Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. The forest has been severely damaged by deforestation by humans. This chapter describes agroforestry revitalization strategies to reduce forest damage and minimize subsequent disasters with an integrated Geographic Information System (GIS) approach. The methods used to study deforestation dynamics in Rokoraka Forest include quantitative and qualitative approaches strengthened by GIS data from Google Earth. The results of the study indicate that there are differences in the management of agroforestry systems that show different results. Rokoraka Forest was damaged because the community and its leaders did not understand the function of the forest. The sustainability of Yawila Forest is well maintained because the community understands the function of the forest with solid leadership. Based on these conditions, traditional agroforestry revitalization strategies are essential for successful forest management. Therefore, an integrated approach to sustainable forest management and GIS-based agroforestry revitalization is recommended.
