Challenges of Ethics and Practice of Political Public Relations in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic
摘要
Political communication is crucial in sustaining a positive public perception of good governance. Questions concerning responsibility, transparency, and credibility have been raised in the light of government spokespersons’ conduct and practices in managing official information. This study investigates the degree of government spokespersons’ adherence to professional norms in their messaging, dealings with the media, and information-sharing mechanisms. By adopting a qualitative research approach that relies on key informant interviews (KII) and a review of pertinent literature, this study discovered that despite the existence of ethics of political communication, much still needs to be done to enshrine, sustain, and enforce these ethical standards in government circles. The paper further revealed that the legitimacy of government communication is often undermined by propaganda, misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information dynamics that empower purveyors of fake news and skew and spin public opinion moulding. The study, therefore, recommends, among other things, the desiderata for more ethical training, tighter enforcement measures, and the development of an independent institutional framework to regulate and sanction the aberrant behaviour of government spokespersons. These actions, the study concludes, support more openness, responsibility, and professionalism in political public relations, eventually fostering a more inclusive, credible, and involved citizen-centred democracy.
